How to reduce an image's file size

Compress Image re-encodes your photo directly in your browser using the Canvas API. You can either pick a quality level (Best quality, Balanced or Smaller file) or set a target file size — like under 1 MB — and the tool will automatically search for the quality level that gets closest to it, using a binary search so it only takes a handful of tries instead of guessing.

The tool supports JPG, PNG and WebP. JPG and WebP compress with adjustable, lossy quality, which is where most of the size savings come from. PNG uses lossless compression, so its file size won't shrink nearly as much unless you explicitly convert it to JPG or WebP, which removes transparency.

Will compressing my image reduce its quality?

Some quality loss is expected with JPG and WebP, since that's how they achieve smaller files. "Best quality" keeps changes barely noticeable, while "Smaller file" trades more quality for a smaller download.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything — decoding, compressing and generating the final file — happens locally in your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers.

Why didn't my PNG get much smaller?

PNG is a lossless format, so there's a limit to how much a browser can shrink it while keeping every pixel and its transparency intact. For a much smaller file, convert it to JPG or WebP using the output format option above.
